Rheumatoid Arthritis: Evidence-based rather than habit-based treatment options
The treatment and outcome of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is much better now than in past decades, a development often attributed to the introduction of biologic therapies for the disease. Biologic agents are indeed an important advance for many patients with RA, but three other major developments also seem to account for improved disease states: adoption of early and aggressive treatment; widespread use of methotrexate; and increased awareness among treating physicians that regular monitoring with quantitative disease measures improves outcomes (compared with use of traditional, non-quantitative clinical impressions).
