Electrolysis of Water and Common Salt Solutions

The electrolysis of water and aqueous solutions of common salts (NaCl, Na2CO3, and Na2SO4) with renewable electricity is potentially the best pathway to move towards a hydrogen economy and sustainable environment, but its cost-effectiveness is a major challenge. This Highlight looks at hurdles and opportunities for the large-scale production of hydrogen through electrolysis.
