			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<blockquote cite="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0025326X12000616"><p>After detailed analysis, the conclusion is that Japan should be responsible for the obligation of immediate notification and since Japan unilaterally discharge the wastes without prior specific permits of other contracting countries, it should also be responsible for the violation of prevention of dumping. Since so far, no material injury has emerged and there would appear to be no culpability as regards the prevention of transboundary harm. Finally, this paper stresses the necessity to develop a worldwide agreement concerning the liability for transboundary harm and to establish an institutional framework for the enforcement of a state’s obligations, and also the great significance of international cooperation between nations and organisations in relation to marine environmental protection.</p>

But that&#8217;s the atmosphere. Oceanographers with their thermometers in Earth&#8217;s biggest reservoir of heat—the world&#8217;s ocean—report in a paper to be published in Geophysical Research Letters that greenhouse warming has in fact been proceeding apace the past decade, not to mention the past half century. Ninety-three percent of the heat trapped by increasing greenhouse gases goes into warming the ocean, not the atmosphere. So taking the ocean&#8217;s temperature is the most comprehensive way to monitor global warming. A group of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists has revised and updated their decade-old compilation of temperature measurements from the upper 2000 meters of the world&#8217;s ocean. Its store of heat (red line with error bars) steadily increased over the past 20 years. And the upper ocean has warmed so much in the past 50 years that its added heat would be enough to warm the lower atmosphere by about 36°C (thankfully a physically impossible feat).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last month, preparatory work began on the Xiaonanhai Dam, with more projects  to follow. Within a few years, the Jinsha will slow to a sluggish pace and its  temperature will drop as a series of large hydropower dams release cold bottom  water from their reservoirs into the river. For species already threatened by  the Three Gorges Dam downriver, ecologists say, the new dams will take away  their last refuge. Last year, the central government solidified plans to  increase China&#8217;s reliance on non-fossil fuel energy from the 2010 level of 8% to  15% of the energy mix by 2020. Nearly two-thirds of that target will come from  hydropower—an increase on par with adding nearly one Three Gorges Dam a year.  Ecologists say China&#8217;s hydropower push will threaten already-taxed ecosystems in  the upper Yangtze.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<blockquote cite="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1382668912000257"><p>In the present investigation, the most commonly used pharmaceutical drug Ibuprofen (IB) was exposed to an Indian major carp Cirrhinus mrigala under static bioassay method to estimate its toxicological effects for a period of 35 days. The median lethal concentration (LC 50) of IB to the fish C. mrigala for 24 h was found to be 142 ppm. In sublethal treatment (1/10th of LC 50 24 h value, 14.2 ppm), a significant decrease in erythrocyte (RBC), mean cellular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and plasma protein levels were observed throughout the study period when compare to that of their respective controls. In contrast, haemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), mean cellular volume (MCV), mean cellular hemoglobin (MCH), leucocyte (WBC), plasma glucose and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels were increased in this study period. On the other hand, a mixed trend was noticed in aspartate aminotransaminase (AST) enzyme activity. Alterations of these parameters can be effectively used as potential biomarkers in monitoring of IB toxicity in the aquatic organisms.</p>

Although bottom trawls on the seamount slopes catch predominantly orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), species composition in the midwater plumes is extremely uncertain. In June 2010, moored underwater video cameras were deployed on the summit of the Morgue seamount (summit depth 890 m), a feature that has been closed to fishing since 2001. Cameras and lights were timed to come on for 2 min every 2 h. Fish response to the mooring was monitored using vessel-mounted echosounders. Moored cameras confirmed that orange roughy were present up to 70 m above the seamount summit. Orange roughy made up 97% of the fish identified from the video. Other species observed included smooth oreo (Pseudocyttus maculatus), spiky oreo (Neocyttus rhomboidalis), deep-water dogfish, cardinalfish (Epigonus spp.), and squid. Total along-track backscatter from the plume varied by a factor of 25 over a period of hours. Peak acoustic densities in the plume (equivalent to 20 orange roughy m−3) were an order of magnitude higher than peak visual estimates (0.64 orange roughy m−3), but relative densities between paired video and acoustic observations were generally consistent.</p>
